about

A side project EP recorded half-satirically, half-sincerely on an SGH-A847 flip phone. Inspired by the couple weeks when I was phone less (shout out to the guy who stole my original phone) and the undying indie musician quest to get the lowest (read: warmest) quality recording device.

There is no thematic thread tying these songs together, it would be foolhardy to search for one.

Thanks be unto Joseph Kiley for the, as always, sweet album art (especially on short notice)

&

Lyd, Gabs, Bengar and Caro for the continued support of my musical endeavors.

&

John Darnielle for writing Your Belgian Things and Eef Barzelay for writing Love The Unknown, and also for presumably/hopefully not being offended that I recorded their unbelievably high quality tracks in unbelievably low quality.

Track Name: Intro/Flip, People Move On
This album is dedicated to the man who stole my phone, without you none of this would have been possible. I will be reporting you to the police eventually but for now, thank you.

They say you're old
They say you're weak and obsolete
They say you're useless
So I'll tell you something sweet
I think you're great
I think your means are worth the time
You're still special
You still keep me on the line

People move on
There are shinier things in store
People move on
They say they don't need you anymore
People move on
there are shinier things in stores
I gotta be honest
no one uses flip phones anymore
Track Name: Dropped Dead
How much longer must I burn here?
Will you know that it's real then?
You spent your life with the sick
People die if you don't heal them

You'd only care if I dropped dead
You'd only care if I dropped dead
All these things you say are just in my head
But you don't know where I've been

I thought maybe you would listen
If threw up blood instead
But it's fine
really it's alright
at least that's what you said

You'd only care if I dropped dead
You'd only care if I dropped dead
All these things you say are just in my head
But you don't know where I've been
Track Name: Your Belgian Things
The men were here to get your Belgian things
They'll store them for you in an airplane hangar
There's guys in biohazard suits
Mud caking on their rubber boots
They're here to keep your pretty things from danger

The men were here to get your Belgian things
They'll spend the whole day hauling them downstairs
I shot a roll of thirty-two exposures
My camera groans beneath the weight it bears

I can see you in my sleep
Playing the points for all you're worth
Walking gingerly across the bruised earth

The men were here to get your Belgian things
They walked right through the door and went flourescent
Their boots were black and shiny and your treasures gleamed like stars
Bones down in the fertile crescent

The arteries are clogging in the mainframe
There's too much information in the pipes
I saw the mess you left up in the east bedroom
A tiger's never gonna change its stripes
I guess
I guess but Jesus what a mess
One way in and no way out

The men were here to get your Belgian things
And only I was here to see them do it
I wish you had a number where you are
It's hard with no one here to help me through it

I can see you in my sleep
Playing the points for all you're worth
Walking gingerly across the bruised earth
Track Name: Arm Yourselves
Fifteen years I spent in this cage
waiting for meals and losing my sight
pick your battles and fight them
'til your arms are gone like mine

Bite off more than you are fed
the hand will grab your tongue and hold it tight
mix your metals and shine them
'til your armor is light and fine

Take my knees, my back, my heart
Drink my blood for strength
when you tear me apart
Bind my legs, my mouth, my arms
I went blind in time
but my world was always dark

Fifteen years performing for slave wage
I can talk but they sell my like a beast-form clown
berating my senses like a never-passing storm
that leaves me with no self worth

Like a frog clinging to a wooden fence
Any attempt to move up sentences me down
Though I'd rather have never been born
than live this life on man's cruel earth
Track Name: Love The Unknown
She asked him
"Why can we not be together?
Why is it we have to part?
Why would you leave with a stranger
When I'm here revealing my heart?"

Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Yeah, I love the unknown

They asked him
"Hey, where's this bus going?"
And he said, "You know, I'm really not sure"
"Well then, how will you know where to get off?"
And he said, "At the place with the most allure"

Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Yeah, I love the unknown

And then his father got him a job
And, well, it paid well
Every day it felt the same
Well, his father was really heartbroken
When he quit and changed his last name

Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
Yeah I love the unknown
I love the unknown
I love the unknown

The doctor asked him what he was afraid of
What was it he was running from?
He said, "Well, it's not a fear of c-c-c-closeness or success
But of going through life feeling known"

Because I love the unknown
I love the unknown
Because I love the unknown
Yeah, see I love the unknown
I love the unknown
I just love the unknown
